The Cask of Amontillado

The thing that i enjoy most about "The Cask of Amontillado" is how cleverly written it is. The story is only a few pages long yet Poe makes everything come together brilliantly. Sometimes when im reading a story ill read a sentence or two and feel like the author just put that there just to make the story longer or something. Poe never does that. each sentence is there for a reason.

What i enjoy most about the story is Montressors murder scheme. He gives fortunado many chances to turn back but fortunado is too full of pride and too cocky too. montressor knows this and takes advantage of it. in a way it is as if fortunado killed himself. Another thing i like about the story is how Poe manages to turn Montressor into the "good guy". what i mean by that is in most stories or tv shows that have murders in them, we, the audience seem to sympthesize with the victim and despise the murderer. in this story the opposite is true. we want montressor to succeed even tho he is murdering somone. i do not know of many stories where something such as this is true.

In class some people said that montressor is crazy. i dont think that he is. Montressor planned the whole murder from start to finish. he knew his victim inside out and his plan depended on whether or not fortunado wanted to keep going. this is a little bit too planned out for a crazy person. crazy people arent typically that organized. they act on emotions such as anger and fear not on intellect such as montressor. i think montressor is a man of great intellect and patience and gets away with his foul deed for that very reason.

Chris,

I completely agree with the beginning of the blog. I feel that Poe is incredible when it comes to effectiveness. He never explains something that has no meaning to the story. As I looked at the story, there is no way to make it shorter. It is all necessary for the "full-effect" of the story. However, I do not agree with your statement about Montressor not being crazy. He may not be visibly crazy, but he very well may be mentally unstable. There is a big difference between the two. There are plenty of people around us everyday, just out in the public, that are mentally unstable, yet they still function with society. Don't you think that putting all of this time, thought, and effort into a murder is slighty "crazy"?
